Welcome to Class Y1B

We have 30 amazing, little students in our class this year.

Mrs Bennett is the teacher and our teaching assistant is Mrs Higson.

Year 1 is an exciting year where we learn to be more independent learners.

We have daily English and Mathematics sessions, including arithmetic, guided reading, phonics/spelling and handwriting.

PE and music are taught by specialist coaches and teachers.

Our DREAM curriculum provides a broad and balanced range of topics to engage and inspire the children in their learning.

We hope our year will be full of fun, excitement and learning.

General Information

Communication
Class Dojo is our online communication platform,  it will be used to communicate with  parents and carers to keep you up to date with what is happening in Year 1B.  You can use Class Dojo to ask any questions and we will do our best to help and answer them.

If a parent or career wishes to speak to a member of the Year 1 team in person, we ask that they use ClassDojo or phone the school office to arrange a suitable time to meet.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any concerns.

Physical Education

PE will be on Thursdays and Fridays.  Your child’s PE kit should consist of a white t-shirt,  black shorts and pumps/trainers. PE kits can be left in school for the half term.  Earrings are not to be worn for PE. If children have earrings in they need to be removed by themselves. Members of staff CAN NOT remove earrings due to health and safety. Hair needs to be tied up.

Homework / Home learning

Homework will be set weekly. This will consist of a weekly spelling list, looking at the harder to read and spell words and either a piece of English or Mathematics work. It will be sent out on a Friday to be returned  by the following Wednesday.  The weekly spelling test will be on Friday during our phonics and spelling sessions.

Reading

We encourage children to read a wide range of books. We send home a school reading book and the children all have accounts on Bug Club to access additional books. Please feel free though to read any other books you have with your child.

All children have a specific banded home reading book. This will be continually targeted to their reading ability and fluency to enable them to become confident, fluent readers. We expect the children to read their reading book at least three times a week.  Reading books will be changed on FRIDAYS.

We do not expect children to read a whole book each night! Little and often is the key to a successful and happy reader. Re-reading books enables children to become more confident and fluent in their reading.

We aim to instill a love of reading in the children, where they see reading as a pleasure and not a chore.

Digital learning platforms

Bug Club - Reading,

 Purple Mash (variety of activities)

We will be using a variety of digital learning platforms this year to support and enhance the children’s learning experiences.  They are fun, interactive apps to encourage reading comprehension skills, spelling, maths skills, topic work and general learning.  All children have been provided with log ins for Active Learn (Bug Club), Ed Shed (Spelling Shed and Maths Shed) and Purple Mash.   If you need any further guidance please ask and we will try to help you.

Any questions, queries or concerns please feel free to  speak to Mrs Bennett via Class Dojo or arrange a convenient time via the school office. I look forward to a super year ahead.
